The Solidarity Cup

2008.11.01

A week after the successful Summer Grand Prix in ski-jumping our best ski jumpers have returned to Zakopane. The reason was the 2nd Ski-Jumping Solidarity Cup held on igelite where the Southern Poland Power Company Plc Jaworzno III Power Plant was one of the sponsors.

The ski-jumping fans may feel a slight surfeit, but together the coaches we thought that 6-7 September would be the most convenient for Polish athletes, who are training for the subsequent competitions, explained Wojciech Grzeszek, the president of The Malopolska Region Solidarity. For Solidarity this open competition bears a special meaning. The trade union supports and reinforces healthy competition and willingness to keep up with the best. The Solidarity Cup give a chance to check one’s own physical condition not only to our experienced contestants but it also allows our young competitors to measure themselves with more titled friends.

All the best Polish ski jumpers as well as junior ones participated in the competition. After yesterday’s victory all I thought about was to have two even jumps. That maybe did not work out that way but I am really pleased, Dawid Kubacki, the winner of both Solidarity Cup competitions winner, summed up his Sunday participation. In the first series he landed on the 118.5 meter but in the second he soared as far as to 131.5m. Rafał Śliż was the first runner-up in the competition with the total score amounting to 234.8 points. Marcin Bachleda was third with jumps: 118 and 123.5 m. Adam Małysz finished the competition on the sixth place. Each spectator present on those days near the ski-jump could see that the competition was very attractive.

The organizers: Izabela and Adam Malysz Foundation, Central Sports Centre, the Tatra Ski Association, The Malopolska Region Solidarity. Above all, the high level of competition was surprising.

The contestants were given diplomas and acknowledgments. Distinctions were presented by the Solidarity Country Committee Chairman Janusz Śniadek, the ZRM Chairman Wojciech Grzeszek and sponsors’ representatives.
