Południowy Koncern Węglowy SA, with its seat in Jaworzno, commenced its production operations on July 1, 2005 basing on the assets and staff of the companies belonging to Południowy Koncern Energetyczny SA Capital Group: Zakład Górniczo-Energetyczny Sobieski Jaworzno III (Sobieski Jaworzno III Mining and Power Company) and Zakład Górniczo-Energetyczny Janina (Janina Mining and Power Company).

The company was established within the framework of the consolidation policy and the power-fuel sector development in order to create a strong and stable fuel basis.

Currently the following companies are part of the structure: Sobieski Mining Company in Jaworzno and Janina Mining Company in Libiąż and they both deal with excavation, treatment and sales of hard coal. The company structure is open and development-oriented – acquisition of new extractive companies to increase the value and reduce dependence on the external suppliers.

In the last decade both companies have carried out numerous technical and organizational alternations aiming at the implementation of modern management forms and solutions designed to speed up the process of adapting to world trends.

Undertakings concerning the increase of the resource base are carried out to secure the company interests in the long-term perspective. The are executed in two different manners – by extracting lower deposits of coal and by acquiring new coal deposits located near the mining companies which have not been utilized before. There are two leading investments with regard to utilization of the coal deposited below the current extraction levels: construction of the Grzegorz pit-shaft in Janina Mining Company and the construction of the 800 meters level in Sobieski Mining Company. Within the framework of acquiring new extraction areas PKW is acquiring areas located between the premises of the two mining companies and the areas adjacent to the western and eastern boundaries of the present mining area. The increase of the resource base leads to the company value enhancement.

Południowy Koncern Węglowy SA has an image of a stable and reliable trade partner. The market of washed power coal dust with reduced sulphur content is the main strategic market for Tauron capital group companies. Similarly crucial, as far as the coal sales revenue is concerned, is PKW trade network with its sites located in the entire country comprising authorized salesmen and dealers.

The increase in the production of coal is carried out by yield increase both from the existing and the newly acquired sources. In order to increase the yield from the new sources the company analyzes geological, mining, technical, organizational and environmental conditions of the coal deposit areas situated in the Upper Silesia mining area which have not been exploited before. This is to result in securing a resource base which will guarantee long-term coal extraction at the minimum level of 2 million ton of coal per year. The company is constantly monitoring the market with regard to the acquisition opportunities concerning the coal mines in operation or those in need of revitalization.

Południowy Koncern Węglowy SA operates in accordance with the modern management form – with the Integrated Management System timing at a better, more efficient and effective management both in the scale of the entire company but also at the level of particular mining companies. System integration with regard to quality, natural environment protection and occupational health and safety enables high management process effectiveness.

Revitalization of pro-ecological undertakings aim at non-waste operation – various types of side products have been utilized as aggregate in civil construction. Aggregate-binder mixtures have been successfully applied in the hydrotechnical constructions (flood embankments).

Południowy Koncern Węglowy SA follows a consistent Human Resources policy with respect to new highly-skilled and educated employees and investments on the human capital development. Cooperation with higher schools and researchers enables selection of promising future workers. PKW developed a training system which is being constantly improved and which is mainly concentrated on the employees’ skill development in the areas in concord with their job profiles. Functioning in the TAURON Group structures guarantees the company a chance for a stable development. The Strategy developed in 2009 for the Business Area - Extraction presents technical, organizational, economic and financial aspects of the company operation to 2020. The strategy was adopted by the Steering Committee for the Corporate Strategy Implementation as compliant with the group’s strategy and its goals are compatible with the strategic goals of the entire group.
