TAURON POLSKA ENERGIA SA, formerly operating under the name of Energetyka Południe SA, was incorporated on December 6th 2006 under government initialized "Programme for Electrical Power Engineering", which provided for establishment of four major business entities that would consolidate both power distributors and producers.

The purpose of consolidation was to create entities strong enough to efficiently compete with other European enterprises within free power market. On May 9th 2007, the Polish State Treasury contributed to Energetyka Południe SA shares of Katowice-based Południowy Koncern Energetyczny SA (Southern Poland Power Company), of Krakow-based Enion SA, Wrocław-based EnergiaPro Koncern Energetyczny SA (EnergiaPro Power Company), and Elektrownia Stalowa Wola SA (Stalowa Wola Power Plant). Besides the four companies mentioned above, the holding comprises also other enterprises. Within the area of power trading - Enion Energia Sp. z o.o., Pierwsza Kompania Handlowa Polska Energia Sp. z o.o. (Polish Energy – The First Trading Company Ltd.), and EnergiaPro Gigawat Sp. z o.o. In the domain of power generation from renewable sources - Jeleniogórskie Elektrownie Wodne Sp. z o.o. (Jelenia Góra Water Power Plant Ltd), Zespół Elektrowni Wodnych Rożnów Sp. z o.o. (Rożnów Group of Water Power Plants Ltd), followed by Południowy Koncern Węglowy SA (Southern Poland Coal Company) in the area of coal extraction. Moreover, TAURON POLSKA ENERGIA SA has taken over Elektrociepłownia Tychy SA and Przedsiębiorstwo Energetyki Cieplnej Katowice SA (Katowice Heat Power Company). Along with heat engineering assets of PKE SA, the abovementioned companies constitute the foundations for creation of the holding of Tauron Ciepło SA.
