List of Essential Environmental Issues at PKE SA
- Particulate emission to air.
PKE SA Power Plants and Heat Power Plants hold suitable permits required by law concerning air protection, and the production processes are carried out under monitoring for the full compliance with the obligatory emission standards.
- Gas pollutant emission to air (vapours, fumes, hazardous substances).
- Process waste arising.
In each organizational unit owned by PKE SA an integrated waste management system operates including:
- thorough and efficient waste separation, and a selective system for their accumulation and storage,
- transportation of waste within power plant sites in sealed conditions,
- safe temporary storage of waste on the site of power plants,
- transfer of waste for recycling or disposal to other economic entities granted suitable permits.
- Noise emission.
Investment operations aimed at the reduction of noise emission resulting from the operation of production machines have been taken. Therefore, at the present time the PKE SA Power Plants and Heat Power Plants do not emit noise exceeding acceptable limits.
- Soil and water pollution.
The identification of potential environmental risks connected with the possible pollution of soil is carried out in each PKE SA unit. Such identification results in the application of technical safety measures against the pollution or contamination of soil or underground water, which includes sealing the area with a non-absorbant surface on the sites of raw materials and waste storage.
- Water pollution.
PKE SA Power Plants and Heat Power Plants hold suitable permits required by law, and for full compliance with the standards of water quality apply suitable technical systems and the continuous monitoring of water.
- Ionizing radiation.
- Depletion of natural resources (negative impact on climate conditions).
The production process based on natural resources (coal) normally results in the depletion of such a resource’s level in the Earth’s crust. For that reason actions are undertaken aimed at the production of energy from renewable sources (biomass). Another trend in activities able to result in a decrease in fuel consumption are efforts in the improvement of energy efficiency by the reduction of electrical energy consumption for our own company’s needs.
