Description - Jaworzno III Power Plant

Jaworzno III Power Plant is composed of two power plants:

  • Power Plant II
  • Power Plant III

Power Plant II

Power Plant II is located in the south - western part of Jaworzno town, in 15 Energetyków Street. The area occupied by power plant II amounts to ci. 90 ha which is 35% built–up. The main technical components include: boiler building, engine building, the buildings for coal handling, water preparation, storage and services as well as the cooling towers and administrative buildings. At present 446 people are employed in Power Plant II. Power Plant II is a heat and power plant for the town and consists of two parts: the old, non- modernized part has four PK-10p pulverised fuel boilers producing heat in the collector system supplying one district heating, condensing type 10 CK-60 turbine set and two condensing type turbine sets WK – 50. In the new part (modernized at the end of 1999) heat and electrical energy are produced in the units system. There are two circulating fluidized bed boilers and two district heating condensing turbine sets. Coal is burned in an environmentally-friendly way – using limestone monoxide as an additive which reduces sulphur dioxide emission and lowers the temperature in the boiler (850 oC). Gradual burning reduces nitrogen oxide emission. The coal silt serving station works for the circulating fluidized bed boilers. The coal silt which has been waste stored in the settling tanks is now burnt in the circulating fluidized bed boilers which improves the efficiency of energy production and has a positive influence on the environment.

Power Plant III

Power Plant III is located in the western part of Jaworzno town, near the Mysłowice border, south - west of power plant II. The area occupied by power plant III covers of ca. 85 ha. The wastewater treatment plant by the Przemsza river is located one km north – west from the power plant. Two km south - east of the plant there is a furnace waste and gypsum buffer storage area. At present there are 1465 employees (31.08.2002) at Power Plant III. Power Plant III has six units with total installed capacity of 1345 MW. This power plant is one of the most modern and largest power plants in Silesia region as well as in Poland as a whole.

The Programme for the Elimination of Environmental Hazards

The implementation of the Programme for the Elimination of the Environmental Hazards resulted in Jaworzno III Power Plant in commissioning a number of environmental protection installations. In 1996 a flue gas desulphurisation treatment plant, in which the flue gases from four units (I, II, V, VI) are cleaned in the wet limestone-gypsum process was commissioned in Power Plant III. In case of disruption in one of these units it is possible to provide the flue gases from the remaining units (III and IV). After cleaning in the flue gas desulphurisation treatment plant the flue gas is led through the cooling towers to the atmosphere. The low NOx emission systems, installed on all boilers between 1995 – 1998, resulted in the reduction of nitrogen oxide emissions by around 50%. The waste arising in the production process in the Jaworzno III Power Plant is used to fill in the neighbouring mining cavities. The pneumatic system for ash removal makes it possible to remove ash in a dry form. For technological reasons slag is transported by water into selected quarters of the storage area. After draining it is picked up and transported into mining cavities. Gypsum is passed to the neighbouring “Knauf – Jaworzno III” gypsum plant. The water used to cover the shortages in the closed cooling circulation is taken from the Przemsza river. The wastewater is discharged into the Przemsza river after cleaning in the mechanical treatment plant. Our goal – production of environmentally clean energy – has become real. In recognition of this achievement, the Chief Environmental Inspector deleted the Jaworzno III Power Plant from the list of Poland’s worst polluters. An additional proof of how much we care about public health in the local community was our obtaining the certificate confirming the implementation of the Integrated Quality, Environment and Work Safety Management System PN ISO 9002, PN EN ISO 14001 and Pn-N-18001.
