Południowy Koncern Energetyczny hosted and co-organized XV Energy Seminar of the Association of Graduates of the Silesian University of Technology in Gliwice, held on 15 March in Będzin under the name of “Energy 2020”.
The Conference focused on challenges faced by Polish energy sector in the light of 2020. By 2020, the European Union is planning to implement the principle of 3 x 20 (20% of renewables, 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and 20% energy efficiency). “It is a tremendous challenge for the sector. Therefore, energy companies need to cooperate closely with researchers to elaborate and implement cutting-edge, environmentally friendly, yet efficient and cost-effective solutions, taking into account the fact that the EU has proposed to channel considerable resources for such investments”, said one of the attendants to the Conference, President of PKE Jan Kurp.
The speech entitled “Energy Problems – Brussels view” delivered by prof Jerzy Buzek also received a lot of attention. Buzek reminded that nowadays the dominant energy issue in Europe is not the energy security by the question of global warming. ”The energy mix for Europe comprises renewables, nuclear energy and carbon. We must remember that from 2020 on, the energy sector will have to adopt zero-emission policy with respect to CO2. Hence, the most vital concern for Poland are clean coal technologies”, said prof Jerzy Buzek. Other lecturers proposed similar theses .
Prof Tadeusz Chmielniak addressed the questions of energy technologies, whereas Janusz Tchórz, PKE CEO, touched upon challenges the company must face in restoration of its generating capacities. The seminar provided an opportunity for presentation of the concept of a poligeneration power plant with gasification system, which is to be developed as a result of cooperation of PKE and Zakłady Azotowe Kędzierzyn. Last but not least, spoke Eugeniusz Białoń, CEO, who lectured on the largest current investment of the Company i.e. the construction of 460 MW unit at Łagisza Power Plant. ”Thus fur, 70% of the project have been carried out”, reported the Manager of the Project. The Conference was also attended by the Vice-President of Tauron Polska Energia, Stanisław Tokarski.
